Frequently Asked Questions

Installation

What do I need to run Rotavue?

A Mac with Apple Silicon running macOS 11 or later, 8 GB of RAM (16 GB or more is comfortable with the AI stages) and about 1 GB of disk for the app. Windows is planned; Intel Macs and Linux are not. See Installation.

macOS says the app is blocked or damaged.

Right-click the app and choose Open once. If macOS says it is “damaged”, run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Rotavue.app.

Where are my projects stored?

In an Rotavue folder in your home folder by default. Use Change on the Projects page to pick another folder. A project is a folder holding project.o2vr (settings), images/ (your photos), preprocessed/ (the build, including tiles/ and the viewer) and packages/ (exports).

Licence and activation

How does activation work?

Enter your key (O2VR-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX) on first launch. The app sends the key, a hash of your machine’s identifier and basic OS information to the licence server, which binds a seat to your machine and returns a signed token. The token is kept in your operating system’s secure credential store (the macOS Keychain).

Can I use Rotavue offline?

Yes. The app re-checks your licence about once a day when it can; if it cannot reach the server it keeps working on the last check for up to 14 days.

How many machines can I use?

Seats depend on the plan: Personal 1, Studio 3, Enterprise 10. To move a seat, deactivate the old machine from the customer portal (or ask support).

What is in each plan?

PlanSeatsViewer build and exportTrial mark on exportsAI stagesCloud project sync
Trial (14 days)1YesYesYesYes
Personal1YesNoNoNo
Studio3YesNoYesYes
Enterprise10YesNoYesYes

Enterprise adds dedicated support and invoice billing. The authoritative list is on the pricing page.

I lost my key.

Sign in to the customer portal with your purchase email and key, or contact support.

What happens after a refund or cancellation?

The server revokes the licence. The app notices at its next check (within a day), returns to the activation screen and the paid features switch off. Your projects stay on your disk.

Projects and capture

How many photos do I need?

CaptureUse
12Quick preview; interpolation recommended
24Standard with interpolation
36Recommended
72 or moreSmooth without interpolation

Fewer than 36 photos around: turn on Frame interpolation (Studio, Enterprise, trial).

Which image formats work?

JPEG, PNG, WebP and TIFF. All photos in a project must have the same pixel size. Photos are scaled down to the project’s Working Resolution (2048 px on the long side by default) before tiling; your originals in images/ are never changed.

Why is my PNG export so big?

Only if the PNG really is transparent (for example a cut-out). Opaque photos, even PNGs with an unused alpha channel, are exported as JPEG tiles. Transparent frames are exported as WebP with a lossless alpha channel, which is several times smaller than PNG.

Can I edit a project on two machines?

With a plan that includes cloud sync, you can push the project file to the cloud from one machine and pull it on another. Only the project file is synced, not the photos or the build.

AI stages

Do the AI stages send my photos anywhere?

No. They run locally; see AI Engines.

The AI stage is slow.

Interpolation and super resolution are the slow stages; see the timings in AI Engines. Turn off what you do not need; you can cancel a build at any time.

Hotspots

Which hotspot types exist?

info, url, navigation, image, video, pdf, youtube and vimeo; see Hotspots. Links must be http:// or https://.

Viewer and embedding

How do I put a project on my website?

Upload the exported folder (or unzip the ZIP) to any static host and link or embed index.html, or use the <rotavue-viewer> web component; see Viewer.

Does the viewer work offline or from a file?

Browsers block some features when a page is opened from disk (file://). Serve the folder over HTTP (any static host, or python3 -m http.server).
